As new high power LED lighting and power hungry electronics develop, the need to successfully dissipate the heat generated by these components and devices increases. Traditionally this was achieved with mechanical heatsinks, higher PCB copper weights (in some cases up to 10oz) and thermal paste solutions. Today for some of these applications the most effective solution is to use a metal backed printed circuit board manufactured from an Insulated Metal Substrate (IMS), usually aluminium, which can efficiently dissipate any excess heat.
